Records, rankings: Buford is 1-1 and No. 2 in Class 6A; Roswell is 2-0 and No. 7 in 5A.

Last meeting: Roswell won 24-7 in 2016.

Things to know: Roswell tries to take down a ranked Class 6A team for the second week in a row. The Hornets beat then-No. 5 Walton 42-32 last week. Trey Smith was 11-of-18 passing for 163 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 112 yards and three touchdowns on 10 carries. Synkwan Smith (committed to Pitt) rushed for 142 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries and scored on a 3-yard pass. Kobby Sakyi-Prah (South Carolina) had four tackles for losses. Buford was off last week. The Wolves lost to Milton 13-10 and beat Benedictine 29-28, winning the latter with a touchdown and two-point conversion with 1:05 left after trailing 21-10 in the third quarter. Dayton Raiola, brother of Nebraska freshman Dylan Raiola, is 20-of-39 passing for 316 yards and two touchdowns. Buford is averaging 169.5 passing yards and 126.5 rushing yards. LB A.J. Holloway (South Carolina) leads the team in solo tackles, assists and tackles for losses. Buford has a state-leading 10 players committed to Power 4 Conference schools. Buford first played Roswell in 1952, when both were small towns that didn’t think of themselves as metro Atlanta.

Hughes at Douglas County

 

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Tiger Stadium, Douglasville

Records, rankings: Hughes is 2-0 and No. 5 in Class 5A; Douglas County is 3-0 and No. 3 in 6A.

Last meeting: Douglas County won 30-27 in 2023.

Things to know: In different classifications now, these schools have played eight of the past 10 seasons as region rivals. Hughes is 6-4 in those games, but Douglas County has won four of the past five. In the 2023 game, Sire Hardaway threw a 29-yard TD pass to James Johnson with two minutes left for the game winner. Hardaway graduated, but Johnson is back. He committed last week to Southern Cal. He’s joined by top-50 junior national recruits Devin Carter and Aaron Gregory to form the most highly touted wide receiver room in state history. The new quarterback is D.J. Bordeaux, who has thrown for 439 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 189 yards. Bordeaux also is a major Division I recruit. Hughes hangs its hat on its offensive line, all five starters weighing in at more than 300 pounds. The most renowned are tackles Tavaris Dice (committed to Auburn) and Dontrell Glover (Georgia). Hughes’ highest-rated recruit is a tight end, Xavier Tiller. Carsyn Baker has rushed for 293 yards. Christian Langford, the heir to Air Noland’s QB spot, has thrown for 349 yards, completing 78.1% of passes, and is a good runner.

North Gwinnett at Mill Creek

 

When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Markham Field, Hoschton

Records, rankings: North Gwinnett is 2-0 and No. 4 in Class 6A; Mill Creek is 3-0 and No. 5 in 6A.

Last meeting: Mill Creek won 49-14 in 2023.

Things to know: North Gwinnett leads the series 13-4, but Mill Creek has won the past two meetings decisively. These two always played as region rivals until 2023. North Gwinnett, holding its highest ranking since 2020, features a dual-threat quarterback and stifling defense. Ryan Hall has thrown for 281 yards and four touchdowns without an interception in two games and leads the team with 152 rushing yards. Nicholas Bookman has three TD receptions. North Gwinnett DE/LB Cole Funderburk (Wake Forest) and 320-pound DL Braxton Kyle (Rutgers) have six tackles for losses apiece. Jake Godfree, a nationally ranked sophomore linebacker, leads the team with 16 solo tackles. North Gwinnett beat then-No. 4 Colquitt County 14-3 last week on the strength of 13 tackles for losses. Mill Creek has beaten Lambert, Norcross and Archer. Shane Throgmartin has thrown for 547 yards and seven touchdowns. Daniel Smith has run for 506 yards while averaging 9.8 per carry. Luke Metz, a linebacker committed to Alabama, leads the team in solo tackles (21) and tackles for losses (four).

Walker plans to play for Rabun Gap

Bo Walker, the all-state running back who failed to get cleared as a transfer to Stockbridge, said he is going to Rabun Gap-Nacoochee and plans to play Friday night.

 

Jeff Sentell of DawgNation was the first to report the news after Walker, who committed to Georgia, posted a cryptic tweet Wednesday morning, saying, “First game back this Friday.”

 

Rabun Gap is a private boarding school that plays in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association and has several major FBS prospects. Rabun Gap defeated GHSA-power Benedictine 43-14 last month.

 

Rabun Gap is scheduled to play at John Curtis Christian in Louisiana on Friday.

 

Walker led Cedar Grove to a Class 3A championship last season and had more than 2,000 yards from scrimmage.

 

Walker transferred to Stockbridge last winter. His offensive coordinator at Cedar Grove, Kendrick Callier, became Stockbridge’s head coach.

The winner, weighed against the outcome of No. 1 Carrollton’s game with Gainesville, could have a case for No. 1. Buford’s lone loss came to national top-10 Milton 13-10 in the opener. The Wolves tore apart No. 7 Roswell of Class 5A 52-17 last week. Douglas County beat Hughes, the No. 5 team in 5A, 21-14. Buford sports 10 seniors who are committed to major Division I schools. That’s believed to be a state record. Dayton Raiola, with 416 passing yards, leads a balanced offense. LB A.J. Holloway (South Carolina) and LB Bryce Perry-Wright (four-star junior) have stood out on a stacked defense. Douglas County is elite at the skill positions with QB D.J. Bourdeaux and wide receivers Aaron Gregory, Devin Carter and James Johnson, all Georgia Power 100 players, but the Tigers are averaging 319.3 rushing yards per game led by Zamarcus Lindley’s total of 510. LB Mike Hastie, committed to West Virginia, is the leading tackler. Douglas County is 2-6 all-time vs. No. 1 teams, its last win coming in 1972 against Woodward Academy.

Records, rankings: Gainesville is 3-0 and No. 2 in Class 5A; Carrollton is 4-0 and No. 1 in 6A.

Last meeting: Carrollton won 41-6 in the first round of the 2006 Class 3A playoffs.

Things to know: Gainesville ranks third and Carrollton seventh in all-time victories among Georgia programs, though the two have met only twice, with Carrollton winning playoff games in 2004 and 2006. Both are city schools that have some of the best facilities in the state. Carrollton is 4-0 with victories over two top-10 teams (Woodward Academy 24-14, Rome 44-22). Julian Lewis is 71-of-90 passing for 1,034 yards and 18 touchdowns. His career touchdown-to-interception numbers are 114-to-5. RB Kimauri Farmer has 447 yards and five touchdowns from scrimmage. Ryan Mosely has 309 yards receiving and six touchdowns. Carrollton’s secondary of stars includes top-100 junior national recruits Dorian Barney and Zelus Hicks, Southern Cal-committed Shamar Arnoux, and Antonio Cromartie Jr., the son of an NFL great and the team’s leading overall tackler. Gainesville has won easily over solid competition, including Westlake, which went down 41-7 in the Red Elephants’ most recent game. Kharim Hughley is 46-of-79 passing for 811 yards and five touchdowns. Carmelo Byrd has rushed for 299 yards. Shane King (Troy commit), Jeremiah Ware (Georgia Southern) and Taz Smith each have at least one 100-yard receiving game. When, where: 7:30 p.m. Friday, Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium, Moultrie

Records, rankings: Lee County is 3-0 and No. 3 in Class 5A; Colquitt County is 2-1 and No. 10 in 6A.

Last meeting: Colquitt County won 37-20 in 2023.

Things to know: Lee County is 0-12 all-time against Colquitt County, with most of those games played before Lee became a prominent force statewide. This is the teams’ fourth straight meeting when both are ranked. In the 2023 game, Lee County led 409-265 in total yards but lost three turnovers and had more than 100 penalty yards. Ousmane Kromah rushed for 179 yards. Kromah, an AJC Super 11 player, is back while most of Colquitt’s offensive weapons have graduated. Kromah has rushed for 377 yards, averaging 10.2 per carry. Weston Bryan, a three-year starter committed to Georgia Southern, has thrown for 509 yards. Lee County’s closest game has been a 45-28 victory over Warner Robins. Colquitt lost to fourth-ranked North Gwinnett 14-3 in its last outing. North Gwinnett then scored 37 in a victory against another top-10 team, Mill Creek, so Colquitt is up to speed defensively, but its offense is having the growing pains expected of a team that starts a freshman quarterback, Cohen Lawson, and that graduated two top-100 national players (WR Ny Carr, TE Landen Thomas) and a three-year starting QB (Neko Fann). The 2023 offensive juggernaut averaged 238 yards passing and 198 rushing per game. The current team averages 110 and 176, respectively.

I happen to think DC has more athletes at more positions than Buford. DC is also very, very physical. Buford will need all those D1's to contribute,  to pull this one out.

Gainesville is complete. Not flashy but effective and consistent on offense. Speedy and deliberate on D. Carrollton's D is predicated on the D-line getting enough pressure to give that all world secondary a helping hand. That side of the ball is....complimentary to JuJu and the offense, which are going to move the ball.

G'ville is once again playing with quite a few newcomers, so loses to graduation really won't be realized until the 2nd season.

G'villes O vs Carrollton's D will hold my attention.
