 This Week's Top 10:

1. St. Edward (previously #3, beat Pick North 28-0): The Eagles looked really good in pre-season scrimmages against Davidson and Glenville, but you never know what to take from scrimmages. After shutting out Pick North on the road, it looks like they are picking up right where they left off. Without 3 power five commits on the line, the offense looked more balanced instead of just pounding teams into oblivion with the run game. Csanyi is the best pure passer they've had in years, and has a good group of receivers to throw to. You can tell he trusts his receivers to make plays in one-on-one situations, but he  has to be more careful with the football moving forward and live to fight another down instead of forcing throws into coverage. We'll find out this week if they are the real deal or if Pick North was just way overhyped as a loaded SJP team comes to Lakewood. 8/31 vs. St. Joseph Prep (PA).

2. Massillon (previously #1, beat NFL Academy London 35-20): Almost the opposite of Ed's, Massillon looked shaky at times in the pre-season and it carried over into week one against NFL Academy London. Yes the game was played across the country on a Thursday and NFL Academy team had some legit players, but the game should not have been that close. Massillon was sloppy and looked undisciplined, committing a number of personal fouls. They will look to get back on track this week and should destroy GlenOak.  8/30 @ Canton GlenOak.

3. Avon (previously #4, beat St. Ignatius 42-21): Ignatius should be much improved this year, but you wouldn't know it by looking at their game against Avon. The Eagles took it to them right off the bat and built a 21-point lead that they would never relinquish. Senior QB Nolan Good and the Avon offense did whatever they wanted for the most part in racking up over 400 yards of offense and the defense put the clamps on Minnesota-bound RB Grant Washington. If they take care of McKinley and Glenville these next two weeks like they should, and if Massillon doesn't get their act together quickly, Avon could easily become the DII front-runner. 8/30 vs. Canton McKinley.

4. Moeller (previously #5, beat then #9 Princeton 38-21): Perhaps even more so than Ed's, Moeller made the biggest statement in DI over the weekend as they laid it on Princeton. Junior QB Matt Ponatoski, a previous Missouri baseball commit, may be thinking more about football these days after his surgical 26-32, 415 yard stat line against the Vikings. Moeller has fallen short in the post-season against Springfield the past few years when they appeared to be favored, but they look ready to get back to Canton in the early going. 8/30 @ Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger (IN).

5. Hoban (previously #2, lost to Archbishop Spalding (MD) 28-14): Hoban coach Tim Tyrrell seemed to blame cockiness and a "me first" mentality on his teams shortcomings this past weekend. That may very well be true, but he also needs to take a look in the mirror about his coaching. Specifically, the lack of any creativity on offense. Spalding is certainly no slouch having won the MIAA Class A title last year and boasting a number of D1 commits, but a team as talented as Hoban needs to win that game at home and not get their teeth kicked in right out of the gate. We'll see if this is a wake-up call or emblematic of what to expect from them moving forward. 8/30 vs. DBP (NJ) on the Flo Football channel.

6. TCC (previously #10, beat Findlay 54-21): The lop-sided win deserves some proper context as Findlay's Georgia-bound QB Ryan Montgomery went down with a season-ending ACL in one of the first few offensive series of the game. That being said, Montgomery wasn't going to be playing defense and TCC absolutely rolled on that side of the ball. Findlay likely would have scored more with Montgomery at the helm, but not enough to make up that gap. As was the case last year, I hate that TCC is in DIII again this year. I'd love to see them against this Avon team in the playoffs. They will host a Whitmer team this week coming off a very nice win over Dublin Coffman. 8/30 vs. Toledo Whitmer.

7. Lakota West (previously unranked, beat then #8 St. X 17-13): Edged out a solid St. X team. Defense once again looks like the calling card, but will need to develop the offense to avoid last year's shortcomings. 8/30 vs. Hamilton.

8. Winton Woods (previously unranked, beat then #6 Springfield 16-6):  The Warriors may have the best defense in the state, headlined by Alabama commit Justin Hill. However, they will need to find some offense moving forward, especially if they hope to get out of R4 this year after moving up to D1. They shut down a high-powered Springfield offense, but Brent Upshaw went out early in the game for the Wildcats. WW's first two scores came off of blocked punts as opposed to their offense working the ball down the field. 8/30 vs. Kings.

9. St. X (previously #8, lost to Lakota West 17-13): Was hoping to see an improved offense from the Bombers this year, and that may still be coming, but LW was able to keep them in check in week one. We'll see if young Herbstreit can go on the road against his old man's alma mater and get things going offensively. 8/30 @ Centerville.

10.  Springfield (previously #6, lost to Winton Woods 16-6): Springfield hangs on this week in the top 10 after a close loss to WW. If not for two botched punt attempts, that game goes down to the wire. I'm not sure what the nature of QB Brent Upshaw's injury is, but they will need him this week as they host Gonzaga (DC) or they may find themselves in an early 0-2 hole. 8/30 vs. Gonzaga (DC) on the Flo Football channel.

Ohio Top 10

1. St. Edward (previously #1, beat St. Joseph's Prep (PA) 35-21): Statement win over nationally ranked SJP with the Eagles exploding in the 2nd quarter for 35 points. Senior Bradley Eaton had one of the best performances I can remember from a St. Edward player with a blocked punt recovered for a TD, a 94-yard KO return, an interception, 3 PBU's and several tackles. This isn't as star-studded a group as in the past, but there are a lot of good football players on this team that play well together. The new look O-line had a questionable performance, but SJP has a very formidable front 7 on defense. Interesting game this week as they play host to 4-peat Kentucky champs Boyle County, calpreps #1 rated KY team. 9/7 v. Boyle County (KY)

    2. Massillon (previously #2, beat Canton GlenOak 45-0): After a so-so performance in week one, the Tigers got back on track by pasting GlenOak. Good confidence-building game before the showdown with Bergen Catholic this week. The Tigers will need a more disciplined performance than what they've shown the first two weeks to beat BC.  9/6 v. #13 Bergen Catholic (NJ).

    3. Avon (previously #3, beat Canton McKinley 21-14): Solid win over a talented D1 McKinley team, but after watching the Bulldogs in week one I expected Avon to beat them more handily.  Glenville comes in this week and will have even more athleticism than McKinley. However, Glenville is very young this year and struggling to find consistency on offense. Avon needs to win this convincingly to hold off Moeller from moving up. 9/6 v. Glenville

    4. Moeller (previously #4, beat Bishop Dwenger (IN) 42-18): Along with St. Ed's, Moeller is looking like the class of D1 so far. Their offense has put up 40+ in both games and the defense has some big time players too. 9/6 v. East Central (IN)

    5. Hoban (previously #5, beat Don Bosco Prep 21-7): The Knights took care of business against DBP and the loss to Spalding is looking much better as they appear to be class of Maryland this year behind SFA. Still like to see more from their offense with the talent on that roster. 9/6 v. Buchtel

    6. TCC (previously #6, beat Whitmer 27-17): Good win over D1 Whitmer. While TCC is still the class of DIII, there are a couple potential challengers that are off to good starts this year in VASJ, Benedictine and Chardon. The Irish start a three game stretch of Michigan teams. 9/6 @ Detroit Catholic Central (MI).

    7. Lakota West (previously #7, beat Hamilton 31-0): Defense looking like it picked up where they left off last year, and the offense was able to get some momentum against Hamilton. Only Princeton is looking like viable threat to them in the GMC this year. 9/6 v. Lakota East

    8. Winton Woods (previously #8, beat Kings 19-5):  Another great defensive performance, but still limited offensive output.  If I'm in R4 and looking at a potential playoff matchup with Moeller, I have to be able to score some points. 9/6 v. Milford

    9. St. X (previously #9, beat Centerville 34-10): The young Herbstreit had a solid performance in leading his team to victory over dad's alma mater. However, X appears to implementing a bit of a 2-QB system with the junior Volmer also taking some snaps. Defense looks vintage St. X in the early going. 9/6 v Indianapolis Cathedral (IN)

    10.  Olentangy Liberty (previously unranked, beat Glenville 24-13): Liberty makes their first debut after beating Glenville this weekend in addition to a shutout victory over Olentangy in week one. I was close to putting Groveport-Madison in here after they knocked off Gahanna over the weekend, but Liberty has a little more pedigree in recent Columbus history. We'll find out soon enough if this ranking is warranted as Liberty will be hosting Gahanna. 9/6 v. Gahanna-Lincoln

NationalHSFB.com Week 4 Power Poll:

1. Moeller (previously #4, beat East Central (IN) 42-13) - The Crusaders find themselves in the top spot this week kind of by default, but they may in fact be the top dog when all is said and done. They have a special QB in Matt Ponatoski who has the offense humming and a solid defense featuring some FBS commits. They haven't been challenged much to date, but the dominating Princeton win in week one is certainly looking better. They were set to take on Benedictine (GA) this week in the Ironton Classic but, for whatever reason, will now be playing Mallard Creek (NC). Ohio could use a win here.  9/14 v. Mallard Creek (NC) @ Ironton Gridiron Classic powered by PGL.

2. St. Edward (previously #1, lost to Boyle County (KY) 38-21) - ED suffered maybe their biggest OOS upset in history. Bottom line, this is still a good football team but is also a work in progress and the hype after the SJP game was clearly premature. But as they say, it's now how you start it's how you finish. The schedule is still riddled with marquee in-state games that will tell us if the Boyle game was a one-off.  They will play host to a 3-0 Elder team this week which presents as many offensive looks and formations as Boyle does. Unlike Boyle though, they don't have a Montavin Quisenberry at their disposal. Still, Ed's needs to find a way to get off the field on 3rd downs and not get dinked and dunked down the field all game. 9/14 v. Elder.

3. Massillon (previously #2, lost to Bergen Catholic 35-21) - This was the second huge OOS upset last weekend in Ohio. Massillon simply NEVER loses at home.  Last week proved the defense is certainly not as good. Hoban and Avon are right there with them in DII, and you could probably swap out either of them in this spot. I want to see how Massillon responds this week against Canisius (NY). Canisius just knocked off a solid Benedictine team, but if Massillon is who we expect them to be, they should handle this team.  9/13 v. Canisius (NY).

4. Hoban (previously #5, beat Akron Buchtel 56-0) - A dominating win over an Akron city league team tells us nothing, but loss to Spalding keeps looking better. Hoban is still probably the most talented team across the board on paper in the state. They should dominate their next three opponents (although Ignatius could put up a fight) before facing a Walsh team that looks like it could have a say in the DII championship talks. 9/13 @ Akron East.

5. Avon (previously #4, beat Glenville 13-12) - For the second week in a row Avon had trouble dealing with an athletic team. If Glenville's offense wasn't so inept at the moment, they probably beat Avon. For that reason I had to drop them below Hoban which I think is an athletically superior team. 9/13 v. Elyria.

6. Winton Woods (previously #8, beat Milford 22-3) - Still don't know if this team can muster enough offensively to win R4, but man are they lights out on defense. They will have plenty of time over the next 6 weeks to try and get the offense together for the playoffs. Looking at the remaining schedule, only Anderson could spoil an undefeated regular season. 9/13 @ Turpin.

7. TCC (previously #6, lost to Detroit Catholic Central 21-7) - TCC's 33-game wining streak was snapped on the road up in Detroit, and they could not find much offense after their starting QB went down with an injury. For that reason, I only dropped them a spot for now. 9/13 v. Brother Rice (MI).

8. St. X (previously #9, beat Indy Cathedral (IN) 35-31 ) - Not what you want to see from an X defense that was looking pretty stout the first few weeks, but still a solid win over a perennially strong Cathedral team. 9/13 v. Withrow.

9. Olentangy Liberty (previously #10, beat Gahanna-Lincoln 31-0) - Complete domination of a GL team that some believed to be the class of Columbus going into the year. However, GL is now 1-2 and is struggling on offense, so it's difficult to tell how good this win was. The OL defense has held its first three opponents to a total of 13 points, pitching two shutouts. This might be way too low a ranking for them, but I can never seem to get a good grip on Columbus. 9/13 @ Olentangy Berlin.

10. Princeton (previously unranked, beat Lakota West 14-6) - Big win for the Vikings over LW after their hype train derailed in week one with a humbling loss to Moeller. The GMC looks mediocre overall and this win may have decided the conference champ as both teams are favored to win out their remaining schedules.
